Lancaster Bomber Animated Art Print

Avro Lancaster over white cliffs of Beachy Head and lighthouse. This animated Art Print features three scenes which give the impression of movement as the eye moves across the image.

In May 1943 a daring mission to destroy three major German dams was launched. Codenamed Operation Chastise it became better known as the legendary ‘Dambusters’ raid. If successful it was hoped the extensive damage caused by the flooding of Germany’s industrial Ruhr Valley would seriously impede the German war effort for months. On the night of 16/17 May, 19 Lancaster bombers led by Wing Commander Guy Gibson of 617 Squadron attacked the Mohne, Eder and Sorpe dams using the ingenious ‘bouncing bomb’ the brainchild of Sir Barnes Wallis.  Gibson acted as “Master Bomber“, talking to and directing each of the aircraft to attack by radio telephone – the first use of this technique in Bomber Command.  The Mohne and Eder were successfully breached with the Sorpe sustaining limited damage.
8 Lancasters were shot down with the loss of 53 aircrew during Chastise. Although it’s impact upon Germany’s ability to continue the war effort was less than expected, the raid quickly became immortalised and proved a huge morale boost for the Allies. For this action Wing Commander Guy Gibson was awarded the Victoria Cross.
