The Spitfire was designed by legendry aircraft designer Reginald Joseph Mitchell (R.J. Mitchell). Its origins can be traced back to the Supermarine S.6B racing seaplane from 1931 built to compete in the Schneider Trophy. The White Cliffs of Dover face the straits of Dover and are within walking distance of Dover Castle is the largest castle in England. Known as the ‘Key to England’ the castle was founded by William the Conqueror in 1066
